The race turned into a political rally, with many of the runners calling for the return of Hariri, who has not publicly spoken since unexpectedly announcing his resignation. The move has plunged Lebanon into political chaos, but on Sunday, on the streets of Beirut, there was a show of unification. Lebanon's Justice Minister Salim Jreissati says there will be no action taken on the resignation of Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, until he returns from Saudi Arabia. Hariri has been meeting King Salman in Riyadh after announcing his resignation in the capital just two days earlier, citing Iran's meddling in Arab countries and fears of an assassination threat. Many fear Hariri's resignation could sow a political crisis in the country, where stability is fragile due to sectarian divisions.
